Soak in Luxury: Things to Consider When Buying a Bathtub

A bathtub doesn’t have to be just a functional fixture in your bathroom – it can be a sanctuary of relaxation and rejuvenation. In our case, it does just serve as a functional feature to wash our toddler, but that didn’t mean that we wanted to sacrifice style.

With many options available, it's crucial to consider various factors to ensure you select a bathtub that not only fits your space but also aligns with your comfort and style preferences. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind when buying a bathtub.

Size and Space

The size of your bathroom and the available space for the bathtub are significant factors to consider. Measure the dimensions to determine what size bathtub can comfortably fit in your bathroom without overcrowding the space. Additionally, consider the doorways and hallways through which the bathtub will need to pass during installation. We almost ran into this problem when installing our cast-iron tub – we had to angle it to fit it through doorways. It was not an easy feat when the tub weighs a few hundred pounds!

Style and Design

Bathtubs come in various styles and designs, ranging from classic freestanding tubs to modern alcove tubs. Consider the overall aesthetic of your bathroom and choose a bathtub that complements the design theme. Pay attention to details such as the shape, material, and finish of the bathtub to ensure it enhances the visual appeal of the space.

Material & Cost

The material of the bathtub not only affects its durability but also its heat retention and maintenance requirements. Common bathtub materials include acrylic, fiberglass, porcelain-enameled steel, cast iron, and stone resin. Each material has its pros and cons in terms of cost, longevity, and ease of cleaning. Choose a material that suits your preferences and budget while considering factors such as insulation properties and resistance to stains and scratches.

  • Acrylic & Fiberglass: These are typically the least expensive options and most readily available at your home improvement stores. There is a wide selection of colors, prices, and shapes. Typically, they range from $400 to $1,700.

  • Cast-iron: When picturing a free-standing tub, a clawfoot cast-iron tub typically comes to mind. While these are more expensive and much heavier than the acrylic and fiberglass alternatives, you get the luxury of keeping bath water warm for long periods. They range from $1,000 to $5,000+.

  • Copper, Stone or Wood: These are great options when you want to have a bathroom to brag about and invite your friends over just to look at the tub. Google and ogle at some of these amazing tubs. They can range from $15,000-$50,000+.

While the average costs of the common types of bathtubs are listed above, they do not include the price for shipping, installation or the hardware that you have to buy for your tub. Keep in mind that our tub filler cost as much as the cast-iron tub.

Installation and Plumbing

Before purchasing a bathtub, consider the installation requirements and plumbing considerations. Freestanding tubs may require additional floor reinforcement to support their weight, while alcove or drop-in tubs need proper plumbing connections. Factor in the cost and complexity of installation, including any structural modifications or plumbing adjustments that may be necessary. This can be as simple as talking to your contractor. For example, we knew that we wanted a cast-iron tub, so we reinforced the floor. We also have heated floors in our bathroom, so when we installed them we left space for the tub.

Our Tub

We were very happy with ordering from Vintage Tub & Bath. They offer free shipping on all tubs, which was very important with a heavy cast-iron tub. We also had an issue with the claw-feet arriving chipped and they sent new ones immediately. We purchased the Cambridge Cast Iron Double Ended Clawfoot Tub with Rim Faucet Drillings. We also purchased this Moen Floor Mounted Tub Filler that matched our sink faucets in the bathroom. Pro-tip: Search for tub fillers on Amazon - we found ours there for $300 off and fast/free shipping.

To summarize, choosing the perfect bathtub requires careful consideration of various factors, including size, style, material, comfort, installation, budget, and additional features. By taking the time to evaluate your preferences and needs, you can select a bathtub that transforms your bathroom into a spa-like retreat where you can unwind and indulge in moments of relaxation and rejuvenation. Or if you are like my family, the tub offers the perfect place for your 1-year-old to splash around in. Soak in luxury and elevate your bathing experience with the perfect bathtub that suits your lifestyle.
